Setting out to touch the Earth, Taeyun and I took a walk through the Daisy Hill Conservation. Along our trail, we arrived at a common junction—the Fiveways—where all forest paths intercept. With no set direction, we chose the path furthest from our starting point, knowing we would eventually come upon a place that means a lot to me.

In a world more disconnected than ever, stronger communities remind us of our shared connection with each other and the world. Chung Tian Temple (中天寺) is a place that brings people together. It is my local Chan temple, a short hike through the forest, and the place I spend New Year and Vesak.

This pagoda stands tall, rising high above the ground—a noble monument to great diligence. Yet it holds no pride, resting still and silent, as if to meditate deeply on it’s conditions: the form we now see, the influence we have upon it, and the influence it leaves upon us.

Taeyun looks back upon the temple as we leave for the day, and continue our walk through the forest. The peaceful and loving environment of the temple left a mark on us both.

It is hard to make the journey back, knowing the forest will be harder to touch once I leave. Still, it will always be there. It takes only a short breath to return to the Earth.
